In late 1938, the Bf 109E entered production with the larger Daimler-Benz DB 601A engine. The airframe underwent its first major redesign, moving the main radiators to the undersurfaces of the wings. A streamlined duct housed the oil cooler under the nose, and a heavier three-bladed Vereinigte Deutsche Metallwerke (VDM)-made propeller completed the modifications.
